Sell in May and Go Away?

The Big Picture has an article that suggests long term the axiom "sell in May and go away" may ring true. The site claims that it also holds true for world markets. During "good periods" (Nov-Apr) the S&P 500 has historically returned 8.5% per year during , while the "bad periods" (May-Oct) returned 3.2% per year. Still not terrible, but not great either.
